Autoimmunity

Autoimmunity essentially happens when the immune system is so stressed and toxic that it starts to make antibodies to the body's own tissues. The type of autoimmunity is based off what tissues is being attacked. For example, antibodies to the joints is called Rheumatoid Arthritis, to the skin - Eczema, to the brain - Multiple Sclerosis. But why does someone get Autoimmunity in general? This is a complex subject that I like to use a metaphor to explain. All the things in the body that create oxidative stress & inflammation all go into the same "bucket" whether that be toxicity, microbial overgrowth, leaky gut, inflammatory foods like gluten/dairy, nutritional deficiencies, emotional stress, or chronic infections like Lyme disease. Our bodies are meant to handle a certain amount of this stress but when it becomes too much, the bucket starts to overflow causing the symptoms of Chronic Inflammation or when excessive...Autoimmunity. In functional medicine, our goal is to identify what specifically for you is filling up your "inflammation bucket" so we can address each one intelligently. If we can drain this bucket by addressing the relevant sources of inflammation, the immune system can calm down, inflammation falls and as you stay in this relaxed immune state, the antibody levels start to fall and the body stops attacking itself. This allows the immune system to relax and reset itself. Our goal is to stop the attack before too much damage is done.

Initial Protocol:
We will use anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory substances like Vitamin A/D/K, high-dose omegas, curcumin/resveratrol, CBD, etc. as we go on a 100% gluten/dairy free diet to put out the fire. This will reduce your symptoms and allows us to start working on "emptying your bucket" addressing the root issues that are causing the inflammation in the first place.
